COMMON SENSE ANTHRAX INFORMATION

The recent terrorist events and confirmed cases of anthrax exposure have caused increased anxiety over the possibility of chemical and biological attacks.  The American Red Cross offers the following common-sense information anthrax.

Anthrax Delivery Methods

Anthrax spores infect only if inhaled, ingested or introduced into an open wound or the eyes.  Even if exposure does occur, the victim is not contagious and the condition is treatable with antibiotics if identified early.  Effective dispersal of anthrax is difficult due to the fact that the bacteria cannot survive exposure to ultraviolet light or direct moisture.  The preferred method of delivery is through letters or packages opened by unsuspecting personnel.  Anthrax delivered in this manner most often resembles a white, dry, fine powdery substance.

Identifying Suspect Letters or Parcels Prior to Opening

Pay attention to the appearance, wrapping, addressing, postage or any other irregularities of any letter/parcel received.  Was the mail expected?  Do you know the sender?  If not, and you feel the item is "suspect", DO NOT OPEN IT.  Place the letter/parcel down and move away from it.  Wash  hands in warm soapy water as soon as possible.  Contact local law enforcement immediately and follow their instructions concerning evacuation.  They will notify the FBI.

If you open a letter/parcel and encounter an unidentified substance:

  • Do not panic.
  • Do not touch, smell, taste or try to analyze the substance.
  • Close the letter/parcel and step away from it.
  • Wash hands in warm soapy water immediately.
  • Alert others to keep away from the area.
  • Notify local law enforcement immediately and follow their instructions.
  • Turn off any circulating fans, air conditioners or heaters.
  • Wait for trained medical and decontamination personnel to arrive.

CDC Recommendations:

  • The wearing of latex gloves when opening mail is neither encouraged or discouraged at this time.  It is up to the individual to make that decision.
  • The wearing of a face mask when opening mail is not recommended during current conditions.
