What is a Real Hero?
Heroes are members of the community who go above and beyond the call of duty to exhibit a true act of selflessness; their heroic acts embody the principles and ideals of the American Red Cross humanitarian mission.
Criteria for Nominations:
The following criteria must be met:
 Nominee must be a resident of, stationed in, or be employed in New Mexico.
Heroic act/rescue my have taken place in New Mexico or out-of-state (e.g. a NM resident on vacation).
The heroic act/rescue must have taken place between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.
In 2010 Nine Heroes from New Mexico received the Red Cross Real Hero Award.

2011 Real Hero Categories
Good Samaritan (Adult) Hero
Presented to an outstanding individual who has displayed courage and caring in reacting to an unusual, significant or unexpected incident.
Good Samaritan (Youth) Hero
Presented to an outstanding young individual (aged 21 and under) who has displayed courage and caring in reacting to an unusual, significant or unexpected incident.
Medical Hero
Presented to a medical professional who acted above and beyond the call of duty to help another in crisis.
Firefighter Hero
Presented to a professional firefighter who acted above and beyond the call of duty to help another in crisis.
Law Enforcement Hero
Presented to a professional law enforcement officer who acted above and beyond the call of duty to help another in crisis.
Disaster Relief Hero
The Disaster Relief Award is presented to an individual or individuals who exhibited heroic efforts in response to a natural disaster or emergency situation, providing relief to victims through financial or voluntary assistance.
Military Hero
Presented to a member of the armed forces (active, retired, commissioned or non-commissioned), from New Mexico or stationed in New Mexico , who has demonstrated a heroic action beyond the scope of his or her job to help another in critical need.
Animal Rescue Hero
Presented to an ordinary citizen who has displayed courage and caring in reacting to an unusual, significant or unexpected incident involving an animal or animals.
Workplace Hero
Presented to an employee who exhibited heroic efforts in response to a co-worker or customer in critical need.
Water Safety Hero
Presented to a Lifeguard or Water Safety Professional who went above and beyond the call of duty to help another in crisis.
